What if playing it safe is the biggest risk of all?

In Matthew's parable of the talents, three servants are entrusted with something valuable. Two take bold action, while the third, driven by fear, buries what he's been given to keep it safe.

His decision raises an important question: When uncertainty surrounds us, do we allow fear to hold us back, or does trust give us the courage to move forward?

This Sunday, Rev. Dr. Tim Moore continues our series, Living Through the Apocalypse, with “Playing it Safe is a Losing Hand.” Together, we'll explore what it means to trust God enough to take necessary risks, both in our personal lives and as a congregation imagining its future.

Preacher's Notes:
The 3rd servant took the safe and prudent pathway. In Jesus’ day, if a friend asked you to look after something valuable while they were away and you kept it in your house, but it was stolen when you weren’t watching, you were still responsible. However, if you buried the valuable in an unknown location and still it was stolen, you were not to blame. The 3rd servant makes a play-it-safe decision. Matthew tells the reason—his boss was harsh and the 3rd servant feared him.

The other two servants invest the money as their boss would. They took bold decisions because they believed their boss trusted them. That trust freed them to take the risks necessary to succeed. Living into an apocalypse forces us into difficult and risky decisions. This parable reveals that playing-it-safe is a losing proposition. But how do we learn to trust God in such times in order to have the courage to take necessary risks? What does MPCov need to learn in order to take the risks necessary for a thriving future?
