About the Event
All ChurchSpiritual Growth
This fall, join Rev. Dr. Steve Shoemaker for a three-part Spiritual Growth series exploring two subjects at the heart of Christian faith: how we understand Jesus and why we worship the way we do.
Drawing from his writing and years of teaching at Myers Park Covenant, Steve will lead us from conversations about the historical and "more-than-historical" Jesus into a deeper exploration of Christian worship, its movements, meaning, and the questions churches are navigating today.
Sundays | October 25, November 1 & November 8

Jesus Stories & Our Ceremony of Love
Sunday, October 25 | 11:15 a.m. | Heaton Hall
Who is the Jesus of history, and how do we understand the Jesus who continues to shape our faith today?
Steve Shoemaker opens our three-part Spiritual Growth series with a conversation inspired by his work on the historical and "more-than-historical" Jesus, which grew from 14 years of Jesus in the 21st Century weekends at Myers Park Covenant.
He'll also introduce his new book on Christian worship, Our Ceremony of Love, setting the stage for the conversations to come over the following two Sundays.
Join us as we begin exploring Jesus, worship, and the questions that connect the two.

The Meaning of Christian Worship
Sunday, November 1 | 11:15 a.m. | Heaton Hall
Why do we worship the way we do?
In the second week of our Spiritual Growth series with Steve Shoemaker, we'll journey through the nine key movements of the classic order of Christian worship and explore the spiritual meaning behind each one.
Rather than simply following an order of service, we'll consider how worship itself becomes a journey of the self before God and why these familiar practices continue to matter.
Join us for a deeper look at what we're doing when we worship together.

Important Issues in Worship Today
Sunday, November 8 | 11:15 a.m.
Worship is rooted in tradition, but it also continues to evolve.
For the final conversation in our Spiritual Growth series, Steve Shoemaker will explore some of the questions churches are navigating today, including hymns, inclusive language, prayer, applause, and even what the Apostle Paul might contribute to the conversation.
Come ready to think, ask questions, and explore what meaningful Christian worship can look like today.
