What has the greatest claim on our lives?
Politics matters. Elections matter. The decisions of our leaders can have real consequences. But for people of faith, no political party, candidate, or government holds our ultimate allegiance.
In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us to give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God. This Sunday, Rev. Dr. Tim Moore continues Hope in a Sea of Political Division by asking what changes when our deepest values are shaped not by the political voices surrounding us, but by our commitment to follow Jesus.
Pastor's Notes
Jesus’ famous statement about giving to God what is God’s and to Cesear what is Cesear’s should be a reminder to us that—as people of faith—we have a greater allegiance than our political parties, or our government. Park Road Baptist has had a partnership with a Cuban congregation for many years. One year the Cuban church’s pastor along with a few lay people were able to visit Charlotte as PRBC’s guests. I don’t remember who was president at the time, but many in the church were not happy with his leadership. The Cuban pastor was fascinated by the way American Christians were caught up in political views. He told them, “We don’t live by what Castro says every day. Why do you care so much what your president says and does? No matter what, we are still to follow Jesus Christ.”
Politics constantly covers the airwaves and algorithms of traditional and social media. Yet, our day-to-day lives march on regardless and most of the time without being drastically impacted by politics. Most of the things that impact our lives have more to do with our faith and relationships and vocation. Politics does matter; the decisions government makes at all its levels impacts people’s lives. But usually societal movements influence politics, not the other way around. How we live out and into our values is the source where we will find hope.
Join us for worship at 10 a.m. in person or online.
Immediately following worship, we encourage you to stay for one of the many Spiritual Growth classes available for adults, youth, and children (Godly Play).
