Theology Pub: Faith, Questions, and Community

Theology Pub, a Myers Park Covenant Church group where thoughtful conversation, open questions, and faithful imagination come together every month. This gathering is for anyone who wants to explore spirituality, theology, and everyday life. Whether you are deeply rooted in church, returning after time away, questioning what you believe, or simply curious, you are welcome at the table. Bring your questions, your stories, and your open heart and mind as we create space for honest dialogue, generous disagreement, and community shaped by love.

This year we will explore the idea that “God always does everything God can do.” Our discussions will be based on Russ Dean’s book The Power of the God Who Can’t, but you do not need to buy the book to fully take part! Ponder the prompts for discussion each month.

Prompts to ponder

• Is God omnipotent? Could God be God if not all powerful?
• “Everything happens for a reason.” Do you believe this?
• How confident are we about who is God?

October 27, 2026 | 6:00–8:00 p.m. | God Above Us

Prompts to ponder

• What is power? What are various kinds of power?
• Which is more prominent in your life, beneficial use of power or abuse of power?
• What does it mean to affirm that God is all-powerful? Can God literally do anything?

November 24, 2026 | 6:00-8:00 p.m. | GOD beneath us

Prompts to ponder

• What would it mean to live a fully actualized life?
• Do you believe in the omnipresence of God?
• Does God answer prayers? Does that mean that the person praying gets what they want?

December 22, 2026 | 6:00–8:00 p.m. | God Around Us

Prompts to ponder

• Where have you seen God at work? How did you know it was God?
• Moses asked God’s name, and God said “I am.” What do you make of this name?
• Thinking of naming God, what name(s) do you use? Lord, Father, Mother, Spirit…? How much does the name shape your understanding of who God is and what God does?

• What is power? What are various kinds of power?
• How much control do we have over life/death? Is there a limit to what science can do?
• When “bad” things happen to people, is there a reason we can understand?
• Does God punish us?

February 23, 2027 | 6:00–8:00 p.m. | God With Us

Prompts to ponder

• Does God allow bad things to happen, meaning God could stop them but chooses not to do so?
• What “bad” things do parents allow to happen to their children?
• If someone loves, does that make the person weak or strong?
• If God is true love, what limitations might be implied by those words?

March 23, 2026 | 6:00–8:00 p.m. | God Behind Us

Prompts to ponder

• God always does everything God can do.” Does this statement give you pause? Why or why not?
• If there were some things God could not do, how would this affect your understanding of divinity? Your relationship with God? Could this kind of deity even be God for you?
• Have you experienced God truly being all-powerful? Has every prayer been answered according to how you prayed?
• Have you ever said “If I were God, I would have …stopped that…healed that…changed that…?” How do you reconcile the tension of believing in a God of love and a God of power?

April 27, 2027 | 6:00–8:00 p.m. | God Before Us

• What truths have changed from your childhood to now?
• Has your idea of God changed?
• Do you believe in free will? In the will of God?
• If God knows the future, can you really have free will if God knows everything that will happen?

May 25, 2027 | 6:00–8:00 p.m. | God In Us

Prompts to ponder

• In the way you conceive of God, where is God? In heaven? On a throne? In nature? In your heart? Is this so for every individual?
• Is God supernatural? What does this mean to you?
• If God only existed in human consciousness or within you, if God were supernatural (as in, separate from nature), could that still be God for you?
