This drop-in class welcomes visitors, prospective members and current members who want to connect with the Church’s story, Covenant, and community.

“Fellow Travelers” — September 20
Get acquainted through personal stories including church history and the name change. 

This will be a getting to know you session. We will examine our church history and legacy, and recent name change. This has always been a church with a wide diversity of spiritual and religious backgrounds. That’s part of what makes this such a rich and interesting place. What’s your history? Class attendees and leaders will be invited to share their own unique origin stories. We’ll learn from each other, connecting through our shared and different experiences and histories.

“The Compass” — September 27
Learn about the Church mission and organizational structure, Membership, and Congregational Statements. 

In this session we’ll offer information about our church’s mission, how the church is organized, who does what, who to talk to when you need help and how to get involved in areas of interest to you. There are a lot of ways to plug in. Interested in environmental justice? Music? Public education? Eldering? Spiritual growth? LGBT community? Mahjong? Bible study? Being crafty and creative? Community gardening? We’ve got a place for you. We’ll also cover our church’s stances on LGBTQ+ Inclusion (spoiler alert: full inclusion for all), as well as our statements on Freedom of the Pulpit (it is free), Racism (we denounce it and work toward its abolition), and Immigration (we stand with our immigrant neighbors). Explore the theology, history, and legacy behind each part of the Church Covenant 

In 1981 our church created a Covenant that is foundational to our life together. It serves as our spiritual touchstone, describing the ways we live and grow together, a people on a journey of faith, open to all and closed to none. We will explore our Covenant through the lens of our church theology, culture and history. How do we approach scripture? What do we think about controversy? About faith? What does it mean to be ‘open to all new light’? Let’s talk about it.

“If These Walls Could Talk” — October 11
Learn about the Sanctuary architecture and history, our worship service, and tour the campus. 

Come with us on a church campus and sanctuary tour. Learn the history of our church’s design and get an overview of our worship service. Answer all the important questions that you’ve had burning in your mind: What’s here and how do I get there? It’s a big campus with a LOT of doors! What is Heaton Hall? Where are the bathrooms? And the children’s classrooms? What’s the Cornwell Center? Learn about the secret tunnel… you’ll be a real insider by the time this session is done!

“The Covenant Path” — October 18
Reflect on the personal meanings of the Covenant and explore paths into Church life.

Here’s where we’ll wrap things up. That one part of the Covenant that you have a question about—ask it. Or the part you really connect to—tell us about it. Want to talk more about spiritual growth and exploration opportunities? About serving the community? What other questions do you have? Where might you like to get involved? What does it mean to be a member? What is pledging? And finally—if you are starting to feel at home here and want to make it official—how can you become part of Myers Park Covenant Church?
