Sometimes, before something new can begin, something else must come to an end.
In John’s Gospel, Jesus uses the image of a grain of wheat falling to the earth before it can bear new life. It’s a reminder that change often asks us to release what has been before we can discover what might grow in its place.
This Sunday, Rev. Dr. Tim Moore continues our series, The Grief and Power of Change, with “The Beginning Comes After the End.”
Join us for worship at 10 a.m. in person or online.
Immediately following worship, continue the conversation at Sermon Talk Back, where questions, insights, and real-world connections are welcomed in an open and thoughtful discussion.
Preacher's Notes:
Change begins in the power of ideas. Someone or someone's dream something different. Ideas to change the dominant narrative. Before change can happen, it must be imagined. Life is an unending series of changes. The phrase, “all good things must come to an end,” is only part of the truth for Christians. We live as resurrection people; people who understand that God keeps bringing resurrecting our lives from the dead places where they are stuck. Transformation is an act of faith. It is letting go of what once was into order to grab out of what is becoming. The ideas, traditions, institutions we cling to either die—before us or with us, but definitely after us; or we choose resurrection. The only legacies we leave behind are the ones that we give away.
