Change is never just change. It is also loss.

Even the changes we choose require us to let go of what once was. Before we can embrace something new, we often need to grieve what has passed.

This Sunday, Rev. Dr. Tim Moore begins a new sermon series, The Grief and Power of Change, by exploring Elijah's journey from despair to hope. When everything familiar seemed to be falling apart, Elijah discovered that God was still present, not in the wind or the fire, but in the silence, calling him toward a new future.

Preachers Notes:
Change is grief. Change means to let go of what once was. Even good change has some sadness to it. You must grieve change before you can embrace change. Elijah thought all was lost and even his own life was in danger. He goes to Mt. Sinai—the place where Moses received the Ten Commandments in order to recover the sacred faith that seemed to be lost. But when he gets there, he finds that God is no longer in the fire and earthquake and thunder. But he hears God in the silence. God approaches him in a new way (and tells him to quit pouting, that God is still working in the world, so get back to doing God’s new work).
