A Powerful Musical Offering in Worship
On Sunday, June 28, the Myers Park Baptist Music Ministry invites you into a unique and deeply meaningful moment in worship with a presentation of Benjamin Britten’s Canticle II: Abraham and Isaac—one of the most compelling musical dramas of the 20th century.
Though not an opera, this 16-minute work for alto, tenor, and piano weaves together music and storytelling to bring the biblical account of Abraham and Isaac vividly to life. The text draws from a 15th-century Chester Mystery Play, part of a tradition that made scripture accessible and engaging for everyday people through dramatic performance. In that same spirit, Britten’s setting offers a powerful, intimate encounter with a familiar story, inviting us to experience it anew.
With remarkable creativity, the two singers share multiple roles—at times embodying Abraham and Isaac individually, and at others joining as the Voice of God and the collective voice of the faithful. This layered presentation adds depth and poignancy to an already moving narrative.
We are honored to have choral scholars David Young and Madeline Olivera lead us in this challenging and beautiful work. Their artistry, along with the collaborative spirit of our music ministry, brings this piece to life in a way that enriches our shared worship.
We give thanks as well for the vision and openness of staff and leadership who allow us to experience such meaningful expressions of faith through music. We hope you will join us for this special offering—one that promises to inspire reflection, deepen connection, and stir the spirit.
