This year, RAIN is celebrating its 34th anniversary of service to our community. MPBC is one of its founding congregations and we have proudly offered funding, leadership, and volunteers throughout these 33 years.
We walk bravely because it’s our opportunity to stand up and be counted, and because all of us have had our lives changed by HIV. AIDS Walk Charlotte is the largest HIV awareness and fundraising event in the Carolinas and is a visual representation of our community’s commitment to HIV and AIDS awareness. Over 2,000 individuals will walk two miles through the heart of uptown Charlotte in celebration of the past, present, and an HIV-free future.
Our MPBC AIDS Walk team is working to raise money for RAIN’s programs and direct services for people living with HIV. Scientific advances have brought incredible new treatment and prevention tools to people living with HIV and those at risk. HIV is now considered a chronic manageable disease, but as we know through the work of RAIN, it is not manageable for everyone. Deep South states, including North Carolina, continue to have the highest number of persons newly diagnosed with HIV and the highest HIV-related death rates of any US region.
We live in a region where HIV is driven by pervasive and multi-layered HIV-related stigma, poverty, and high levels of racial inequality. RAIN’s programs treat people with compassion and respect, helping them find the stability needed to stay in treatment and live long and healthy lives.
AIDS Walk Charlotte is the signature fundraising event for RAIN (Regional AIDS Interfaith Network), which has served the Charlotte community since 1992. RAIN’s mission is to engage the community, transform lives, and promote respect and dignity for all people touched by HIV through compassionate care, education and leadership development. The Walk is a family affair – kids, pets and all who want to participate are welcome.
The AIDS Walk is Saturday, May 30. Our goal is to raise $7,500. If you would like to donate and/or join the Myers Park Baptist team, sign up by clicking the button below.
