Transition Team Update: Congregational Conversation on Mission

On Sunday, August 10, 2025 we gathered to begin the next stage of the transition period–Mission. A church’s mission is the unique purpose that guides all decisions of the organization. Discerning our mission as a church is a vital step of transition. Understanding who we are and what our values are will allow us to know what we are looking for in a new senior minister. We can’t call a minister expecting them to tell us who we need to be. We have to find who we are so that we know who should walk alongside us on our journey.
It was wonderful seeing so many congregants in Heaton Hall sharing in community and working together. The walls rang with joyful energy as voices filled the room. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend. During our time together we worked on creating mission statements inspired by our church covenant. We hope you found the experience spiritually, intellectually and emotionally fulfilling.
We want everyone to be able to participate even if they weren't able to be there last week. You will find a copy of the exercise adjusted for independent study format by clicking on the button below. Feel free to use this as an opportunity to have your voice heard and as a meditative exercise. If you were at the meeting last week, we also invite you to revisit the work you did. See if any other ideas arise while drinking coffee, working out, gardening, or journaling. Anyone is welcome to share mission statement ideas with the transition team. Please send any work you want to share to the transition team at .
INDependent STUDY EXERCISE: MAKING A MISSION STATEMENT
Going forward, the plan is to get a small group of volunteers together to further workshop and compile a shortlist of potential mission statements that will be brought to the congregation and deacon board. In the end, we hope to make a new mission statement for the church that can capture who we are and why we are here. The new mission statement can be used in marketing, education of new members and children, and in our church profile for our senior minister search. If you have any interest in being a part of that small group, please reach out to members of the transition team at and look in the coming weeks for more updates.
If you weren't able to be with us on August 10, but would like to hear the conversation, you're in luck! We recorded the event.
