Hope Wrapped in Love: MPBC Helps Make the Season Brighter for Local Families

This holiday season, Myers Park Baptist Church embraced the true spirit of giving by “adopting” 15 families from Pinewood Elementary School. These families, carefully chosen by the school’s counselor and social worker, included 33 children—each with unique hopes and needs.

What happened next was nothing short of remarkable. On Wednesday, November 26, we received the list of families and their requests. By Sunday, November 30, every single family was covered! Each child had provided their clothing and shoe sizes, something they needed, something they desired, and something to read. Parents weren’t forgotten. They shared specific needs for simple essentials like towels, washcloths, or food gift cards, and those requests were lovingly fulfilled.

The response from our congregation was overwhelming. Thirty-three members of MPBC stepped forward to “adopt” a child, ensuring that no one was left behind. In addition, the Roundtable voted to purchase $100 Aldi gift cards for each family and collected a wonderful assortment of new books for the children.

Wrapped gifts will be placed in the Heaton Hall Foyer on Sunday, December 14, ready for delivery. Under the leadership of Martha Abernethy and a dedicated team of volunteers, these gifts will be taken to Pinewood Elementary, where parents will pick them up—empowering them to share in the joy of giving.

The gratitude from Pinewood has been heartfelt and profound. And the generosity of our congregation? Truly inspiring. This is what community looks like. This is what love in action feels like.

Thank you, MPBC, for making this season brighter for 15 families and 33 children. Your kindness is a beacon of hope and joy.
