Digging In: Pinewood's Community Garden Gets a Fresh Start

The Pinewood Elementary Community Garden is thriving thanks to the incredible efforts of volunteers and community partners. On Saturday, September 6, a dedicated group of 18 volunteers—including four students from UNC Charlotte—completely cleared all five garden beds of years’ worth of weeds, laying the groundwork for new growth.

The following Saturday brought even more energy and collaboration, with 25 volunteers joining in. Participants included members of Myers Park Baptist Church, five Pinewood staff members, several Pinewood families, and Sofia along with two members of her Queens University Sustainability team. Together, they planted starter plants generously provided by Johnson C. Smith University.

A special thank you goes to Ken Steiner for delivering a trailer full of fresh soil, and to both Ken and Rick for distributing it to each of the five beds in preparation for planting.

With this strong start, we anticipate harvesting before Thanksgiving—a true celebration of community, sustainability, and shared purpose.
