Freedom School Recap

A big THANK YOU to all who volunteered for Freedom School
“It takes a village to raise a child” and that is exactly how MPBC jumped in to help the scholars at Freedom School at Pinewood. Our members took time to read, cook, serve, and chaperone field trips so the kids could have a summer enrichment like no other. A phone call was received one evening from Kathy Bahnson who wanted to see how becoming a Reading Buddy could fit into her busy schedule. She developed a special relationship with a scholar, Shannon. Every week, they both looked forward to Reading Buddy time. Each week, Kathy brought a book for Shannon to keep at home. During the final week, Shannon melted Kathy’s heart and surprised her with a beaded bracelet he had made.
It is amazing how relationships are created and nurtured with just a small amount of dedication. The love was evident in the finale performances. The closing song, “Something Inside So Strong,” was outstanding! Some of the words of the chorus are: "Something inside so strong. I know that I can make it, though you’re doing me wrong, so wrong. You thought my pride was gone, oh no. There’s something inside so strong, something inside so strong."
This was an unforgettable summer!
