The tradition of Lessons and Carols dates back to late Victorian England, with the most famous service held at King’s College, Cambridge. The first Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at King’s College took place on Christmas Eve in 1918.
Before the late 19th century, Christmas carols were typically sung by groups visiting homes, and because carols were considered secular, they were excluded from Christian worship. During the Victorian era, the growing popularity of hymnody encouraged church musicians to incorporate carols into worship services.
At Myers Park Baptist, we honor this historic framework while diversifying its content. Our service will feature music and readings that tell the Advent and Christmas story through classical, contemporary, and gospel anthems. The congregation will join in singing beloved carols accompanied by our grand Aeolian-Skinner organ and strings. We hope you will join us for this joyful celebration of tradition and community.
