Join us for a meaningful conversation about leadership at our upcoming gathering, along with a delicious Thanksgiving-themed lunch featuring turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, stuffing, squash casserole, corn, cranberry sauce, and brownies for dessert. Please RSVP in advance so we can ensure plenty for everyone!
As a community, we’ve already explored two of our five focus points—Heritage and Mission—and released a new mission statement. On November 16, we’ll turn our attention to Leadership, specifically governance.
The Strategic Planning Committee (SPC) will recommend “right-sizing” the Board of Deacons (BoD). For 67 years, the Board had 36 members. In 2019, it was reduced to 18 plus 3 Life Deacons. The new proposal suggests reducing it further to 12 members plus 2 Life Deacons.
Historically, we’ve had subsets of Deacons, such as the Executive Committee, Management Council, and Church Council. Under the new structure, these will be consolidated, and the smaller BoD will take on all responsibilities, increasing efficiency.
We’ll also strengthen our Ministries and their connection to the BoD. Leadership committees (HR, Leadership, Finance, SPC) will reopen to congregants, offering opportunities to serve. Ministries are where the real work happens and where future leaders grow and develop. They will serve as an effective pipeline for future Deacons.
To improve communication, one or more Deacons will serve on each Ministry. This will help ensure a steady stream of new members are called into Ministry work.
The SPC will be present throughout the coming weeks and at the November 16 Congregational Lunch and Conversation. Our goal is to have the best governance system in place by the time we call our new Senior Minister.
Remember: These changes are not set in stone. Revisions can be made as needed.
