Celebrating | World Communion Sunday
When we consider the Eucharist (The Lord’s Supper), only a “symbol” will do – as symbols are powerful tools that point us to a reality beyond themselves.
Worship Guide will be available the Thursday before.
This Sunday, we gather for World Communion Sunday as Rev. Dr. Layne Smith preaches on I Corinthians 11:23-26 with a message titled “Just a Symbol.”
The bread and the cup may be “just symbols,” but symbols have power. They point us beyond themselves—to unity, grace, sacrifice, and the presence of Christ among us.
Join us as we join with Christians around the globe in this sacred celebration of shared faith and table fellowship. Worship with us in person or online at Myers Park Baptist Church.
The Meaning of Kintsugi
Church member and Transition Team member, Sam Slack, will be sharing a work of Japanese art known as "Kintsugi" as a symbolic representation of God's grace and healing in the form of a repaired Japanese tea bowl.
Dating back over 400 years, Kintsugi transforms broken pottery by repairing it using golden lacquer, silver, or brass to fill the broken seams. This ancient practice offers a powerful metaphor for human life and relationships; even though me may feel broken, we can heal and become stronger, wiser, and more beautiful as we mend. And in that journey, God is present--working within the cracks, guiding the restoration, and revealing grace through every seam.
Our God is a God of second, third, and even infinite chances. As we remember the pain and struggles of the past year, we can trust in God’s healing power—to restore relationships, renew hope, and become stronger vessels of God's love.
