As we continue our commitment to lifelong learning, meaningful engagement, and aging with intention, our next Sage‑ing Lunch invites you to explore an important topic shaping our community’s future: sustainability and responsible waste management. Join us on Tuesday, March 3, from 12:00–1:30 pm in Heaton Hall as we welcome Jeff Smithberger, Director of Solid Waste and Recycling for Mecklenburg County.
Jeff brings a wealth of knowledge and firsthand experience to this conversation. As the leader of the county’s Solid Waste and Recycling division within the Land Use and Environmental Services Agency, he oversees everything from long‑term planning and waste processing to community outreach and the operation of four full‑service recycling centers. His work includes guiding programs that help residents reduce waste, recycle effectively, and understand the environmental impact of everyday decisions.
Jeff joined Mecklenburg County in 2014 after serving as Director of Solid Waste for Fairfax County, Virginia. With a Bachelor of Science in engineering and additional MBA coursework completed at Virginia Tech University, he brings both the technical expertise and practical leadership needed to navigate the growing demands of sustainability in a rapidly expanding region like ours.
During this lunch-and-learn session, Jeff will share insights about how our community manages solid waste, what happens behind the scenes at recycling facilities, and how residents—especially older adults—can play a role in building a cleaner, greener future. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and walk away with practical tips for reducing waste at home.
Bring your curiosity, your questions, and your appetite for both good food and good conversation. We look forward to another meaningful gathering as we continue the Sage‑ing journey together.
Reservations are required.
Please remember to call the church office or go online through Realm to make your reservation.
The lunch costs $15 and will include a variety of options including vegetarian. Feel free to bring your own lunch, if you prefer.
NOTE - We need everyone to RSVP whether you are ordering lunch or bringing your own so that we can properly prepare for everyone.
