A Call to Action: Responding to Gun Violence

Local Opportunities

In response to continuing gun violence, and to the Call to Action that Rev. Dr. Ben Boswell posed in his sermon "Do You Hear the Children Sing?" on Palm Sunday.

The Interfaith Coalition on Gun Safety (of which Myers Park Baptist Church is a member) has put together a list of opportunities for you to take action.

• Review and sign the Interfaith Coalition petition on Gun Safety.
• Participate in Moms Demand Action Charlotte chapter which meets monthly on 2nd Tuesdays from 7-8p at Caldwell Presbyterian Church. Scarlett Hollingsworth and Grace McClain, leaders. Check out their incredible Interfaith Outreach and Organizing Toolkit.
• Wear Orange June 2, 2023 for National Gun Violence Day (see the Interfaith Outreach and Organizing Toolkit for more information).

National Opportunities

This ongoing issue has many of us wondering what we can do in response to mass shootings in America. We have compiled a list of options.

• Sign a petition to Congress urging legislation to ban assault weapons and large-capacity magazines. From the Brady Campaign. 
• Take one or more advocacy actions recommended by Sandy Hook Promise.
• Participate in an organizing action from Everytown for Gun Safety.
• Organize a Guns to Gardens event sponsored by the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship. Download a brochure about this effort.
• Use the Gun Violence Congregational Toolkit and other resources from the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship. Pre-Order Printed Copies ($12) of the UPDATED Gun Violence Prevention Congregational Toolkit, 3rd Edition, coming in late 2023.
• Read “Gun Violence Report and Recommendations” approved by the 225th General Assembly (2022) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) for additional ideas. Support the initiatives recommended in the report. 
• Donate to the work of:
