The Ministry of Worship and Music

all_choirs_2011Theology of Worship
Worship at Myers Park Baptist is the gathering of a diverse, intergenerational, ecumenical community of faith, celebrating God’s active and timeless presence in the world. In worship, God re-forms our hearts, minds and bodies, and ignites our imaginations with sacred stories – stories that invite us to question, explore mystery, express joy and grief, and deepen our faith. We worship to learn how to develop caring, empowering relationships with each other, and to stay centered in God as the world swirls around us. We worship to be inspired and prepared to exemplify the compassion and justice of Jesus in our church family and in the world. Through worship, God frees and transforms us in heart, mind and body, so we can make a difference within ourselves, in our relationships and in our community.

How Do We Worship?
Focusing on God, worship at Myers Park Baptist unfolds consistently with the
Isaiah 6 scriptural model: praise, confession, pardon, calling to respond,
commitment and sending out. All our worship services are built on this ancient
structural form, regardless of worship style, venue or theme. Communal practices
within worship – radical hospitality, confession and assurance of pardon, passing
the peace, silence and listening, spirited hymn singing, presentations of gifts, and
active participation in Communion – transform worshipers into newness with
God and one another. Themes for services, based on lectionary scriptures,
annually portray the narrative arc of God’s redeeming love for humankind

We Welcome Organist John Richardson

It is with great pleasure that we announce John Richardson has been hired as our Organist. John’s educational background includes Organ Performance degrees from The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, PA, and undergraduate study with Richard Morris (a Virgil Fox protégé) at Clayton College and State University in Morrow, GA. At Curtis, John studied with nationally-known organist John Weaver. He brings an ecumenical background drawing primarily from the Presbyterian tradition, but he has also served in Methodist, Baptist, and Episcopal churches.

John is the son of a Baptist minister and grew up in a musical home in Lakeland, Florida. He began playing piano by age three and was the organist at his father’s church at age eight. John also dabbles in playing the fiddle and the musical saw.

John has assisted and directed church music programs and played concerts in numerous cities across the United States. Most recently, he served Covenant Presbyterian in Charlotte and First Presbyterian of Allentown, PA.

As an accomplished musician, John brings exceptional organ and piano skills, as well as ease with improvisation. He enjoys a variety of musical styles. He is engaging, warm, and genuine, and laughs easily. When not making music, John is freight brokering loads of produce across the United States.

Music is an integral part of our worship and our educational programs. The church has a comprehensive choral music program encompassing all ages from birth to the oldest senior member of our Chancel Choir. Our music staff is highly skilled and committed to offering the highest quality musical training, resources and musical selections for all our choirs.

Do you like to sing? We offer musical opportunities from birth through adults, so please get in touch and share the gift of your voice!

"I have found MPBC to be a place of intellectual and emotional nurture for me; always encouraging me to wrestle and grow beyond my shortfalls and challenges. The musical programming and meaningful worship has been a grounding of my spiritual development from childhood through the present. I will be forever grateful for having grown up in such an open and accepting theological environment."
