Friendship Garden

Our Friendship Garden is back and growing strong! The ten raised beds had been sitting empty – except for some weeds – for the last few years.

Thanks to William Campbell, his scout troop, and his parents, the beds have been weeded, a beautiful handmade bench has added, as well as a new cedar tool shed.

In December of 2021, new member, Lynn Gallagher, volunteered to help get the garden back up and growing. She set out to put together a team of church members. She thought this would be an easy task because who wouldn’t want to play in the dirt and witness the wonder of mother nature who so eagerly provides us with nutrition and beauty? Well, it has been six months and there are now six gardeners planting, weeding, and watering.

More than pounds of produce have been grown, harvested, and donated to Loaves and Fishes including broccoli, swiss chard, basil, lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, and kale. The tomatoes continue to turn red; the green beans are being planted every three weeks, there are tiny bell peppers, the eggplants are budding, and the onions will be ready to harvest and donate soon.

Lynn says that since she grew her first vegetable at the age of 12 years, she has never thought of gardening as “work.” To her it has always been an act of love and thanks. Nature gives us everything we need – the dirt, seeds, water, and sun. all we have to do is keep the soil healthy, plant the seeds, water the plants in between the rain, and pick the vegetables.

But the plants, like children, need tending to so that they can grow healthy and strong. That’s where human hands come in. Do you have 30 minutes to help us to provide fresh vegetables to our neighbors in need? You can sign up to water, pick vegetables, deliver them to Loaves and fishes (just 4 miles from the church), turn a mulch pile, or plant some seeds. The more help we have, the more food we can grow and donate. You can sign up for one time, once a week, once a month, whatever you can do would be greatly appreciated.

Never gardened before? Contact Lynn Gallagher and she will meet you at the garden. We need you!
