Myers Park Baptist Gives $125K to Affordable Housing Efforts in Charlotte
Myers Park Baptist Church (MPBC) has approved a grant of $100,000 to Urban Ministry Center and a grant of $25,000 to HousingCLT in response to the need for affordable housing identified in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Opportunity Task Force report of March 2017.
“The people of Myers Park Baptist hope to inspire others to work together to care about the common good, to love their neighbors, and to create a city where everyone can afford to live,” according to Senior Minister Ben Boswell. For 75 years, the independent voices from the free pulpit of MPBC have called for inclusion, affirmation, and action toward social justice and equality. This congregation has spent recent years examining and awakening to the realities of white supremacy, systemic oppression, racial bias, and immigrant injustice. Funding affordable housing in Charlotte is vital to addressing these inequities. The people of Myers Park Baptist, a bold and spirited church, found the funds within their community to demonstrate the boundless hospitality of God by giving generously to affordable housing efforts throughout the city of Charlotte.
The $100,000 gift from MPBC will help fund Urban Ministry’s Housing First model, a joint effort with landlords to house clients in existing apartments throughout the city. This includes a resource center, complete with case managers, health professionals, community, and amenities for residents of scattered site housing.
The Church’s $25,000 gift to HousingCLT will help to secure gap funding in rent for up to 12 months, provide loans to renters for security deposits, and cover the cost of renter background checks for property owners. This type of collaboration between rental property owners, professional property managers, and homeless service agencies has proved successful in Nashville and Seattle, matching people in need of affordable housing with available properties.
Committed to both deep spiritual practice and the public practice of faith, a previous community gift came from the Cornwell Endowment Mission Tithe Fund that enabled MPBC to grant $100,000 to Time Out Youth (@TimeOutYouth) for a new shelter and resource center for homeless LGBTQ youth in 2017.
