MPBC’s organist, John Richardson, will be playing an organ concert on May 5, 2019 at 4:45pm at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York City, one of America’s largest cathedrals (pictured above). John will perform two major solo organ works for their weekly recital following the Evensong service at 4:00pm.
The first piece will be the Organodeon of Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodaly. John performed this piece at MPBC last summer for the Charlotte American Guild of Organists summer recital series. Kodaly was pleased enough with this composition that he transcribed it into a choral work as a mass setting for a service of Eucharist.
The final piece on the program, Maurice Durufle’s Suite, Op. 5, is a real tour de force for organists and has taken months to learn. With the registration of the instrument(s), the technical demands of the performer and the musicality of performance, this piece is known to most organists as the most difficult piece in the 20th century repertoire. The Suite was dedicated to Durufle’s composition teacher, Paul Dukas, and in turn John will dedicate this performance to his organ teachers, Marie Johnson, Richard Morris, and John Weaver.
All are welcome if you’re in the NYC area.
