- Spiritual Growth
October 17-19, we welcome the Rev. Barbara Brown Taylor as our speaker for this year’s Jesus in the 21st Century Lecture Series. A graduate of Yale Divinity School, ordained Episcopal priest, author, public theologian and current Butman Professor of Religion at Piedmont College in Georgia, Rev. Taylor’s background has been deeply informed by institutional religion. In more recent years, her books have been infused with her discoveries and explorations of spirituality outside the bounds of conventional religion.
Whether writing of great theological and spiritual issues or of her experiences as a parish priest, Rev. Taylor writes with humility, candor and an eye for keen observation. She is a master story-teller and has been named one of the 12 greatest preachers in the English-speaking world by the renowned divinity school at Baylor University. In April 2014 her new book was featured on the cover of Time Magazine which also named her among the 100 most influential people in the world for this year.
Her latest book, Learning to Walk in the Dark, is an exploration of darkness in the Judeo-Christian scriptures, and its traditional interpretation by the church. Rev. Taylor re-examines scripture and uncovers aspects of the darkness few of us have considered when we read the sacred texts. She looks back and finds many experiences of spiritual darkness among the great leaders of faith, including Moses, Jesus, the desert fathers and mothers, St. John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila and others.
She also intentionally puts herself in places of physical darkness and quiet, letting us know what the experiences were like and how she was changed by them. And most of all we learn that while darkness may be a repository for our instinctual fears, it also holds the promise of spiritual transformation and healing.
Rev. Barbara Brown Taylor is one of the truly great speakers and spiritual writers of our time. We are grateful for the chance to be with her this weekend.
