The Surgeon General of the United States, Vivek Murthy, has said that Americans are currently experiencing an epidemic of loneliness and social disconnection. He writes, “Loneliness is far more than just a bad feeling—it harms both individual and societal health. It is associated with a greater risk of cardiovascular disease, dementia, stroke, depression, anxiety, and premature death. The mortality impact of being socially disconnected is similar to that caused by smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day and even greater than that associated with obesity and physical inactivity.”
We believe our church is uniquely positioned to address loneliness and social disconnection by creating intergenerational opportunities for our people to get together to build relationships and develop a deeper sense of community. To that end, this fall, we are launching a new Wednesday night initiative called Second Wednesday Night Socials @ Suffolk Punch. These gatherings will be primarily relationship driven. We will meet at the new Suffolk Punch at South Park Mall where there is a plethora of parking, food, beverages, indoor and outdoor seating, as well as play areas for the kids. We hope that you will put this event on the calendar and set aside time this fall to join us on the second Wednesday of every month for this important time of connection and community.
